This 16-meter wide and 8-meter high dome-shaped washi lighting wall
was created by wrapping a steel frame with washi produced with a special
3-D paper- making technique. Placed at the entrance to the room in which
jomon earthenware is displayed, this paper wall is intended to suggest
a prehistoric dwelling or geological stratum. When sunlight strikes
the bits of rope and bark embedded in the paper, a relief-like texture
stands out. After sunset, the internal built-in lighting produces a
dynamic contrast between the steel frame and the ropes. The part facing
the passage, where visitors may touch the wall, was strengthened by
adding resin to the paper. |
